Headless SEO, SearchGPT & Merchant Center Changes – Melbourne SEO Meetup Recap for August 2024

Headless SEO, SearchGPT & Merchant Center Changes – Melbourne SEO Meetup Recap for August 2024

The first Tuesday of the month means another Melbourne SEO Meetup!

The August 2024 Meetup was a fun time, and I was stoked to be presenting again alongside the brilliant Nicholas Tie. We dove deep into the world of Headless SEO, a topic that’s been causing quite a stir in our industry for the past half decade.

I love geeking out with my fellow SEOs as we nerd out over complex web architectures and modern development paradigms. It’s a topic that even experienced developers grapple with, so I was stoked to break it down for our wonderful Melbourne SEO community.

Welcome to Launchpad

We were blessed with a seasonbly warm Melbourne winter night, with over 50 passionate SEO professionals making the journey to join us at Launchpad in the heart of Richmond. The turnout continues to showcase the amazing reach and inclusiveness of the Melbourne SEO Community.

This event was hosted by the dynamic duo of Nik Ranger and yours truly, with Launchpad providing a top-notch venue. They did an ace job accommodating all the attendees, with plenty of pizza and drinks to keep everyone fuelled up for the SEO goodness to come.

There were two main segments this month.

Nik Ranger & myself kicked things off with a comprehensive SEO news update, covering some hot topics that have been shaking up our industry. Then, Nicholas Tie and I took the stage for our deep dive into Headless SEO.

Mingling and Chit-Chat with the Melbourne SEO Community

I say it almost every month, but the Melbourne SEO community is second to none. It’s always fantastic to catch up with everyone and see how things are going both professionally and personally.

I got to yarn with a bunch of familiar faces and some new ones too. The sense of community and the willingness to share knowledge never fails to impress me. It was an absolute pleasure to present to such an engaged and curious audience.

A big thank you to Nik Ranger for co-hosting and to all the behind-the-scenes heroes such as Paula Glynn who make these meetups possible.

SEO News: Merchant Center Shakeup and SearchGPT on the Horizon

Nik Ranger kicked off the evening with a ripper of a news update. She covered a fair bit of ground, but two topics really stood out: the recent changes to Google’s Merchant Center and the buzz around SearchGPT.

Merchant Center Next: A New Dawn for E-commerce SEO?

Nik broke down the key changes coming with Merchant Center Next, which Google started rolling out on July 22, 2024. Some of the highlights include:

  • A centralised Analytics tab for all your business insights
  • AI-powered Product Studio for creating tailored product assets
  • Simplified brand website verification

While these changes promise to streamline operations for many e-commerce businesses, Nik pointed out a potential gotcha: the new interface currently lacks feed rules and supplemental feeds. This could be a big drama for businesses relying on these features for bulk editing.

SearchGPT: OpenAI’s Shot Across Google’s Bow

The other hot topic was SearchGPT, OpenAI’s early candidate for a search engine competitor. Nik provided a detailed early analysis of how SearchGPT chooses its results, including:

  • Relevance to the query
  • Authority of the source
  • Content quality and recency
  • Diversity of perspectives

Nik’s breakdown of SearchGPT’s inner workings, including its use of the mclick system for content scraping and its real-time search adjustments, was eye-opening. It’s clear that AI-driven search is no longer a far-off concept but a rapidly approaching reality.

Search Volatility: The Only Constant is Change

Nik also touched on the recent ranking algorithm volatility, particularly around July 4th and July 18th. Many sites saw significant traffic drops, especially to category pages, and there were reports of AI snippets negatively impacting click-through rates.

It’s a reminder that in the world of SEO, we always need to stay on our toes!

Headless SEO: Navigating the Future of Web Development

After Nik’s news update, it was time for Nicholas Tie and me to take the stage and dive into the world of Headless SEO. We structured our talk around six key areas:

  1. What is Headless?
  2. Ecosystems & Monoliths
  3. Rendering Paradigms
  4. Routing in Headless Systems
  5. Batteries Not Included: Building SEO from Scratch
  6. Cost of Ownership

What is Headless?

We kicked off by defining what we mean by “headless” in the context of web development. It’s all about decoupling the content management from content delivery, allowing for more flexibility in how and where content is displayed.

We compared this API-driven architecture to traditional monolithic systems like WordPress or Magento. The key differences lie in flexibility, scalability, and the level of developer freedom vs established ecosystems.

Ecosystems & Monoliths

This section was a bit of a whirlwind tour through the modern web development landscape. We covered popular frameworks like React, Vue, and Svelte, as well as newer players like Solid and Qwik.

We then moved on to meta-frameworks like Next.js, Nuxt.js, and SvelteKit, which provide additional structure and features on top of these base frameworks.

Finally, we discussed the concept of a framework-agnostic approach, focusing on good API design and the benefits of a microservices architecture.

Rendering Paradigms

This was where we really got into the nitty-gritty. We covered the spectrum of rendering methods, from traditional client-side rendering (CSR) and server-side rendering (SSR) to more advanced techniques like hydration and resumability.

We dove deep into the pros and cons of each approach, particularly focusing on their SEO implications. For instance, while CSR can provide rich, interactive user experiences, it can pose challenges for search engine crawlers. On the flip side, SSR is generally more SEO-friendly out of the box but can be more complex to develop and maintain.

Routing in Headless Systems

Routing is a crucial aspect of SEO, and it works quite differently in headless systems compared to traditional monolithic CMSs. We compared file-based routing (popular in modern frameworks) with config-based routing (common in traditional MVC frameworks and CMSs like WordPress).

To illustrate the complexity of routing in headless systems, we did a deep dive into SvelteKit’s advanced routing capabilities. This example really highlighted how powerful (and potentially complicated) routing can be in a headless setup.

Batteries Not Included: Building SEO from Scratch

One of the biggest challenges with headless systems is that many SEO elements we take for granted in traditional CMSs are not included out of the box. We discussed the need to build critical SEO elements from scratch, including:

  • Robots.txt
  • XML Sitemaps
  • HTTP Header Responses
  • <head> Elements Management
  • Structured Data

We emphasised the importance of balancing static vs dynamic generation and ensuring proper integration with the content API.

Cost of Ownership

Finally, we tackled the often-overlooked aspect of maintaining a headless system over time. We discussed the need for robust team knowledge, strategies to mitigate technical debt, and the importance of embracing adaptability.

A key takeaway was the need to balance SEO stability with progressive enhancements as the digital landscape evolves. It’s not just about building a headless system; it’s about maintaining and evolving it over time.

Wrapping Up

As always, the community was out in force and it was a pleasure to field questions througout the talk. The audience had some great questions throughout that really pushed us to think on our feet.

It’s clear that there’s a lot of interest in headless SEO, but also a healthy dose of scepticism about its complexity and potential pitfalls.

We wrapped up the night with some networking and more informal chats. It’s always a pleasure to see the Melbourne SEO community sharing knowledge and experiences over a pizza and a drinks.

Looking Ahead

Headless SEO is clearly a topic that’s going to be increasingly important in our industry. While it offers exciting possibilities for flexibility and performance, it also comes with its own set of challenges.

As SEO professionals, we need to stay on top of these developments and be ready to adapt our strategies accordingly.

A massive thank you to everyone who attended, to Nik for her brilliant news update, to Nicholas for being an awesome co-presenter, and to Launchpad for hosting us. Here’s to another successful Melbourne SEO Meetup!

See you all next month, when we’ll be diving into another hot topic in the world of SEO. Until then, keep optimising, Melbourne!
